大致内容: 文中的\我\叫尼克(Nick)，从中西部故乡来到纽约，住在盖茨比(Gatsby)的隔壁。夜晚，盖茨比常在自己的豪华宅第举行派对，无论认不认识盖茨比都可以参加。也因为盖茨比的这个习惯，尼克通过参加派对认识了他。故事就这样开始了。

尼克是个善于观察的人。文中有很多处是对人物的外形，房屋建筑设计装修等的描写，他也了解到盖茨比的一些往事并与他结为好朋友。

年轻的盖茨比并不富裕，是一位少尉军官。他爱上了戴茜(Daisy)，戴茜也对他一见钟情。但一战爆发后，盖茨比被调去欧洲。后来，戴茜跟一个富家子弟－汤姆(Tom)结婚。事实上，戴茜的婚姻并不美满：汤姆能够满足她的物质需求，但在精神上戴茜是感到空虚的。而且汤姆在外还有情妇。

戴茜结婚的事情盖茨比很痛心，于是立志要做个富翁。几年后，盖茨比成功了，在戴茜家的对面盖起一幢豪华宅邸。每晚眺望戴茜家，举行派对都是为了引起戴茜的注意。

戴茜是尼克的远方表妹。尼克知道盖茨比做的这些事情的原因，他想让他们见次面。戴茜和盖茨比不时地有见面，也彼此还相爱。但此时戴茜对盖茨比的爱已经发生改变了。

在戴茜心烦意乱地开车时，巧的是把汤姆的情妇撞死了。盖茨比了解了还替戴茜顶罪。情妇的丈夫追究起责任，但在汤姆的挑拨离间下，情妇的丈夫开枪打死了盖茨比。

盖茨比死后，尼克尝试打电话给盖茨比的好朋友们，可每个都有理由，都没有去参加葬礼。

后来，尼克、戴茜、 汤姆从西部移居到东部，但尼克看透人们的虚情假意，决定远离城市的喧嚣浮躁回到了原来的地方。

A wafer of a moon was shining over Gatsbys house, making the night fine as before, and surviving the laughter and the sound of his still glowing garden. A sudden emptiness seemed to flow now from the windows and the great doors, endowing with complete isolation the figure of the host, who stood on the porch, his hand up in a formal gesture of farewell.

And as I sat there brooding on the old, unknown world, I thought of Gatsbys wonder when he first picked out the green light at the end of Daisys dock. He had come along way to this blue lawn, and his dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it. He did not know that it was already behind him, somewhere back in that vast obscurity beyond the city, where the dark fields of the republic rolled on under the night.

Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgiastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but thats no matter —tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms further...And one fine morning —

So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

盖茨比变富裕了，可对戴茜的爱一直没变。为她做了很多事，最后还是没有得到戴茜的爱并死去了。

\于是我们奋力向前划，逆流而上的小船，不停地倒退，回到过去。\ 一战带来的苦难，疾病，贫穷，以及欧洲移民的涌入，美国梦越来越遥不可及，个人的梦想无法实现，社会的发展趋势的倒退，字里行间透出作者的嘲讽与悲哀。
